Secretary General



Shri Uday Kumar Varma is the Secretary General of apex industry body ASSOCHAM (The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India). Prior to assuming this position in August 2018, Shri Varma demitted the office of Administrative Member, Central Administrative Tribunal, Principal Bench, New Delhi - a position that entitled him to the status, responsibilities and privileges of a High Court Judge.
 
Shri Varma belongs to the 1976 batch of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). He has extensive administrative experience at the highest levels of administration in both central and state governments. Prior to joining the Tribunal, he held the position of Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B), Government of India as well as Secretary, Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME).
 
Shri Varma has an outstanding academic record. He holds a Post-graduate Degree in Public Administration from the prestigious and renowned Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, where he was a Mason Fellow. He is an alumnus of Banaras Hindu University from where he completed his B.Sc. (Hons.) degree with first position for which he was awarded Malaviya Gold Medal. He also holds a postgraduate diploma in French. He was awarded Km. Aarti Mukherjee Gold Medal at the National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie.
 
He is also a published scholar with two books and numerous articles to his credit. Apart from being an accomplished orator in both English and Hindi, he has good working knowledge of French, Urdu and Sanskrit.
